Summerside: We Demand Homes for All and a Tax on Big Oil!

We are facing a worsening housing crisis, sky-rocketing bills, and climate-driven disasters that threaten our health, homes, and communities.

As people suffer, fossil fuel companies and the corporate class continue to rake in obscene profits.

We know that municipalities are at the frontlines of dealing with climate impacts and the cost of living crisis. But local governments can’t solve these problems alone. Communities across the country deserve federal funds and support.

That’s why I’m calling on you to demand a federal tax on the fossil fuel industry to ensure safe, green, affordable homes for all.

The federal government must tax Big Oil to fund:

-Affordable, safe, zero-carbon public housing
-Retrofits that maximize energy efficiency and reduce our bills
-A universal heat pump program that saves lives, protecting us against extreme heat and cold
-Tenant protections and immediate relief in the face of extreme weather and rising rents
-Cheap, reliable renewable energy, generated in partnership with Indigenous communities when possible

We are facing many overlapping crises. We need all levels of government to work together to address the needs of people everywhere.

I urge you to take decisive local action to ensure affordable, safe, green homes for all.

Onwards to a just, climate-safe, and affordable future.

Why is this important?

People in our community are struggling to pay their bills and afford basic necessities. All this as the climate crisis gets worse, year after year, putting our health and safety at risk. That's why we're calling on municipal leaders from coast to coast to coast to sign our open letter demanding Homes for All and a Tax on Big Oil!

Municipalities must firmly commit to climate solutions that materially improve our lives and safeguard our future, and must also raise a unified voice to demand federal support. Join a growing movement of communities standing up for bold climate action!
