Prime Minister Trudeau: Reform the National Energy Board
Justin Trudeau ran for Prime Minister on the promise that under his leadership, the broken National Energy Board would be overhauled. Sign this petition to urge Prime Minister Trudeau to stay true to his word.
Why is this important?
1. To meet the commitments the Canadian Government made in Paris last year to stay within 1.5 degrees of warming, most of the world's known fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground.
The National Energy Board, which advises the Canadian Government on major energy projects, has for decades functioned as an arms length approval body for the fossil fuel industry. The body doesn’t even consider the life cycle carbon emissions of the projects they review. Not only that, but has the body has been wrought with controversy, and their consultation processes, especially with indigenous people, has been wholly inadequate.
The NEB is currently reviewing Enbridge’s proposal to replace and increase capacity for 35 km of the Line 10 pipeline -- one that would cut across important farmland in our community. We are calling on the Trudeau government to suspend all NEB hearings on pipeline projects until the NEB has been overhauled.
